Bear Smart
Be Bear Smart on Fort McMurray Trails
Fort McMurray’s scenic trails are home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, which are commonly seen in Wood Buffalo. It’s crucial to be prepared and aware of Bear Smart practices. To enhance your knowledge, please refer to the Alberta BearSmart Program guide.
Here are some tips to stay safe and ride smart while enjoying your journey.

Make Noise
Bears are less likely to approach if they hear you coming. Talk, sing, or use a bell to alert bears of your presence.

Stay Alert
Keep an eye out for signs of bears, such as tracks, scat, or disturbed vegetation. Avoid areas with fresh bear signs.

Ride in Groups
Bears are less likely to approach groups. Riding with friends can enhance your safety.

Carry Bear Spray
Always have bear spray accessible and know how to use it. It can be a crucial tool in an emergency.

Avoid Riding at Dawn or Dusk
Bears are more active during these times. Plan your rides for daylight hours.

Secure Food and Trash
Never leave food or trash on the trails. Bears are attracted to smells, so pack out all waste.

Know What to Do
If you see a bear, stay calm and do not run. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight. If the bear approaches, use your bear spray.
